Affirmations

The best way to change the way you feel is by using affirmations. Affirmations is a series of positive thoughts that will help you to feel more positive and confident.
For example, "I am a good rider, I can do this and jumping is fun" your not only feel better and more confident, you also change your body language, which your horse is going to pick up on.
Our brain only picks up on key words like 'falling off, scared, getting hurt', So it doesn't matter if you think to your self "I don't want to fall off" your brain only focuses on the 'falling off' part.
The key to feeling more confident is to focus only on what you want to achieve.
You can put together some of your own affirmations, words and sentences that make you feel confident and then using them consistently when you are in a situation where you get nervous.
Changing the way you think will help you to feel different too.
Your a star!!!!

How your thoughts effect your riding

If our thoughts create a matching feeling in our body and our body language is made up of how we think and how we feel. Our thoughts need to be purposeful. Before a ride I tell my students to create the lesson in their mind exactly how they want to experience it. If a rider can see themself having a lesson on a calm horse, sitting up straight and riding confidently, they start to feel confident. Confident feelings create confident thoughts. Confident thoughts create confident actions. If a rider feels confident before a lesson they are more likely to be relaxed when they are on the horse. If the rider feels relaxed and thinks relaxed thoughts, there is a good chance the horse will be relaxed as well.
If I teach riders who have lost their confidence, I make it a priority for them to collect 'good experiences'. The more good experiences a rider has and the more memories of good rides, the easier it is to feel confident.
By purposely remembering these 'good experiences', the rider can gradually change their story about riding and their perception of what's going to happen.
That's how you change your reality.

How our horse reads us

We have talked about how our thoughts effect our feeling and with that our body language. We all know that as a rider we use our body language to communicate with our horse by using our weight, seat, legs and hands to apply aids and therefore tell our horses what we want them to do.
But do we really tell them what we WANT them to do?
A rider who is scared that the horse is going to take off and buck will generally pull on the rein, grip with the knees, lean forward and possibly even dig in their heals. All this while they desperately want the horse to be quiet, relaxed and calm.
From a horses perspective, it has just been pulled in the mouth, kicked in the guts and feeling the panic that comes from the rider, which signals to the horse that there is danger near by.
The horse being a fight or flight animal, now has only one thing on its mind: 'to get away as fast as possible and at all cost'!
So do we really communicate to our horse what we want them to do?
No, that's because we generally focus on what we DON'T want to happen, like:
- I don't want to get bucked off
- I don't want my horse to be stiff on the right rein
- I don't want it to stop at the first fence.
With these thoughts we keep creating a body language that communicates exactly that!
So how do we change? The first step is to be aware of what your thinking and doing.
Stay tuned next week.

You feel how you think and you think how you feel

The language we are using, internally and externally, create chemical reactions within the brain. The brain then sends messages through the body searching for a matching feeling. That means that you feel the way you think.
We also know that our thoughts and feelings create our body language and it is that body language that communicates directly with the horse.
So, how does your thinking influence your riding?
From an instructors point, I want my students to sit tall with their shoulders back and chest open and relaxed. The arm needs to hang of the shoulder with the elbow soft and flexible and a closed fist that controls the contact to the horses mouth.
The riders tailbone needs to be tucked in and the groin open to allow the riders weight to be on the seat bone. The knee needs to be on the saddle without gripping and the calf being the main driving force with the weight remaining in the stirrup and the heal the lowest point of the rider.
This is how we generally would describe a good seat.
Now what happens when we feel anxiety, get scared or get pushed too far out of our comfort zone, the body goes into what we call the 'fetal position' which is a automatic protection mechanism designed to protect our vital organs in our body.
And it looks like that:
- the shoulders become round and the arms get tense, pulling towards the body
- the groin closes up and the wight comes out of the saddle
- the heals come up and the knees start gripping together
Does that sound familiar and could your thoughts be the trigger of it all?
Over the next weeks we are going to look into this more closely.

Exercise No. 9

Now that you had a few days to practise and think about what we've done so far, how do you feel?
Remember you can always leave me comments and I will get back to you.
Are you using your affirmations? And are you feeling different?
Change is a working progress and knowing what the outcome is going to be is vital. So never ever loose sight of the bigger picture, no matter how tough it gets.
The final step to change is to CELEBRATE.
Celebrate what you have already achieved and celebrate what you are going to achieve in the future.
Remember you get more of what you focus on, learn from your mistakes and celebrate your achievements.

Exercise No.8

Affirmations are a great way of changing your thought patterns. Saying things like:

- I'm very relaxed when ever I ride my horse
- I am successful
- I always remember my dressage test
- I can jump a clear round

Saying affirmations in your mind will help you to change your thoughts and focus on what it is you want to achieve.
Write down your own affirmations and practise them daily.

Exercise No. 7

In order to change you have to do something different.
Einstein's definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.
Most people find it difficult to change because they are so used to be doing things their way that it has become an automatic, unconscious response and lets face it; it's comfortable. And who wants to be uncomfortable?!
If you for example have a habit of hanging on to your horses mouth, in order to improve your riding you first have to do something different like changing the position of your hands by carrying them higher or lower. By changing your hand position you are already re-programing your mind, bringing a unconscious behaviour into the conscious and therefore being able to focus on it easier.
When we are doing something automatically, we don't think about it, which means we are unaware of what we do. By changing it becomes unfamiliar and we now have to focus on what we do because we are not used to doing it this way.
Tomorrow we talk more in detail how to change fear into confidence.

Expersice N0.6

Every time we learn a new skill we form a new neurological connection in our brain. That means that nerve cells who are activated and working together to perform the new learned skill, stick together and connect so that we can remember that skill and perform it over and over again. Just as we form connections when we learn skills, we also form neurological connections around thought patterns and beliefs.
Whenever we have thoughts our brain produces bio chemical reactions. The brain then releases chemical signals that are transmitted to the body where they act as messengers of the thoughts. Every thought produces a chemical that is matched by a feeling and as a result you now feel the way you think!
When you feel a certain way chemicals travel back to the brain, making sure you think matching thoughts.
So now you not only feel the way you think, you also think the way you feel.(acknowledge the book as reverence)
If you are more interested in the science behind thoughts and feelings I can recommend the book ‘Evolve your Brain’ by Dr. Joe Dispenza D.C.
This shows why it is so important to focus on 'what we want to achieve'.
I'll write more about how we can make changes next time.

Exersice No. 5

Now its time to become aware of the chatter in your mind and start to listen to it more closely. What is it you are telling yourself?
Your brain only picks up the key words in your chatter. Just like Google it focuses on the keyword not the whole sentence. If you type into google:" I don't want to hear anything more about Paris Hilton" what is it coming up with? That's right, 10 pages full of news on Paris Hilton.
So start focusing on your key thoughts. If you tell yourself :"I don't want to fall off." your key word is 'fall off'. "I'm not going to forget my dressage test again" keywords are 'forget' and 'dressage test'. So be aware of your thoughts and whenever you catch yourself focusing on what you DON'T want, turn it around into something you DO WANT. Creating a clear picture of what it is you DO WANT also helps you to feel that way.
So your homework is to pay more attention to what's going on in your thoughts.

Exersice No.4

Did you find your lesson and could you see the learning?
Congratulations, that's a big step.
Now be grateful for the lesson.
Remember you always have a choice how you look at things and this will give you the opportunity to see things differently. Instead of focusing on the bad things, start to look for the good things.
By doing so consistently you train your mind to be positive.
Remember you feel what you think and you think how you feel.
Tomorrow we talk about how to re-program your mind.
Have fun.

Exersice No 3

So to recap on what we have done so far: You have written down what it is that you want to change about yourself and you have found the origin when that behaviour, fear or belief started. Now it's time to find the lesson and the learning in what happened.
If you have experienced something you don't like chances are you feel like a victim. A victim thinks things like:"why did this happen to me? What have I done to deserve this? Everyone is giving me a hard time. It's everyone else's fault."
If this is you, I'm afraid to tell you that you are stuck in a rut of negative thoughts, behaviours and ultimately negative outcomes. The only way to get out of this is to find your learning and that will change your thinking.
Now I know it's tricky to see something good when you don't feel good.
Let's start by accepting that there IS something good in your bad experience.
For example your learning could be that you can trust yourself more, that you have learned to sit up and listen to your instructor more or that you have to change the way you feed your horse.
Finding your learning gets you out of being a victim and empowers you to move forwards.
This is the most important step, so take your time and commit yourself to this.

Exercise No.2

Well how did you go, do you have written down what it is you want to change about yourself?
O.K. then lets get started.
Lets think for a moment about the 'old' you and the area about your riding you want to change. Lets just say its getting over anxiety at competitions.
Go back and think about when it all started. What was the very first thing that happened that you can remember being associated with anxiety at competitions. What was the trigger?
Was it a comment someone made to you about competitions being hard? Or was it maybe the pressure you felt of having to do well? And if it was the pressure did you put this on yourself or did someone else put it on you.Take your time to identify when it all started and document it down.
Talk to you tomorrow.
Cheers Tanja

Exercise No.1

Since most of the readers following this blog are horse riders lets stick to a horsey theme. If you are not horsey you can just adapt the exercises to any other area in your life.
The first step to change is you need to identify what it is you want to change. So in riding terms this could be letting go of fear when it comes to certain things like jumping, competition or trail riding. It could also be a choice to become more positive or more determined to follow your goals.
So the first step is to sit down and to take a long, hard look at yourself. What is it you want to change? Take a pen and paper and start to write it down.
This is your homework for day one, enjoy the self discovery and I'll see you back tomorrow.
Cheers Tanja

Quote of the day

Hi everyone, I'm very happy to hear that there are some people reading my blog and they seem to enjoy it.
Thank you.
I'm currently reading a fascinating book "Evolve your brain" by Joe Dispenza what it tells us is that changing our life is as simple as changing our mind. It talks about our brain cells forming neurological connections with each other which leads us to behave and response in ways that are congruent with our external world and the experiences we have collected. In order to change our life and get a different result we need to force our brain to gather new information and form new connections, which isn't that hard to do.
I thought we could run through some of these concepts over the next few weeks and discover together how how easily it can be done. I invite you to come on a little journey with me and please feel free to ask questions and make comments at any time.
If you have trouble commenting on the blog you can send me e-mails on tanja@equestriansuccessmindset.com
Talk to you tomorrow.

I think it's time to share some of my health philosophies with you.
I spent the last three days in Brisbane at a Chiropractic Seminar called DG (Dynamic Growth). It was all about Health, Love and Success.
I have learned about our body's amazing ability to self heal and self regulate. What does that mean?
Well it means that our body has the amazing ability to heal itself and maintain health throughout life. All we have to do is to make sure it can function the way it was designed, without interference. Dis-ease comes when we get out of wack, physically, emotionally and chemically.

Physically - that means get your nervous system checked regularly to make sure that the messages from your brain actually reaches the area of your body it was meant to. Keep it free from interference, also called subluxations. There is nobody more qualified to do this then a Chiropractor.(I'm happy to pass on some names of Chiropractors in your area)

Emotionally - that means to love yourself, using affirmations to keep you on track and searching for lessons and learning's throughout your lifetime. All this and other things we discuss here on the blog will help you to stay balanced and emotionally healthy.

Chemically - the food you eat and the household products you use on a regular basis including shampoo, soaps and insect repellent. Start by reading the labels and look at the ingredients, you might be surprised to find what's in some of the products you thought were safe. Look through the Internet and start to educate yourself and then take appropriate action.

I have realised that in order to stay true to myself I have to share more of MY philosophy with you, some of which you might agree and some of which you won't. Remember it's not about being right or wrong, it's about telling MY TRUTH so you can begin to find your own.
I'm grateful to all you readers for giving me your time and patients
lots of love
Tanja

"A stumbling block to the pessimist is a stepping stone to the optimist."
Eleanore Roosevelt, former First Lady

Whenever I set myself a new task that I want to achieve I know that I'm very close to succeeding when things are really bad and don't seem to work for me at all.
When you feel like giving up that's a sure sign that success is just around the corner, unfortunately most people don't stick around for long enough to see it.
Next time you feel like quitting, think about this and keep going.

Poem of the day

Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

This is my favorite poem by Marianne Williamson

Since it is my Birthday it seems appropriate to start my new blog today.
When I woke up this morning I couldn't help myself grinning as I realised that I have exactly 63 years and one day left of living. You might ask "how do you know that?" Well I have set this date on my 11th Birthday and it hasn't proven wrong yet, since Iam still alive I have to assume that it will come true. The point is I have planed my life. I have a very clear vision what it is that I want to achieve and the purpose why I'm here. Unless I set myself a deadline how would I know how much time I have left to get everything done. Strange concept? Maybe, but you would have to agree that death is the only thing that is certain in live, so why not factor it in from the start?!
One of the reasons I am here on earth is to share some of my wisdom I have gained in this life and many other lifetimes before.
My passion is sport, in particular horse riding and when I coach sports people on how to be more successful I find that by coaching them about unconditional love and gratitude, balance and respect success seems to come automatically.
So now you can join other elite and recreational athletes in learning the principles of abundance and success by following this blog and using the quotes and wisdom to impact your life for the better.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing.
Lots of love
Tanja
